The Maritime Museum, now in its new location at Magazzino 26 (Warehouse 26) in the Porto Vecchio (Old Port) of Trieste, shows the different aspects of maritime history that is linked to the city's own history.

The collections are organised into thematic sections divided between the third and mezzanine floors.
The starting point is the nineteenth-century city and its port, both detailed in a large diorama. Various videos introduce the great themes of marine economy, work, the evolution of boats, engineering and design, and sea travel on an ocean liner, on a sailing boat or a fishing dinghy. Voyages take different forms depending on whether they are for commerce, work, exploration, tourism or enforced emigration.

Important finds from the Academy of Commerce and Nautical Sciences of Trieste, founded by the Empress of Austria Maria Theresa in 1754, are on view, including a globe of the world and a celestial globe.

here are numerous models of the large merchant sailing ships built by the shipyards, reproductions of sections of the boats for educational purposes, and models of ships used for exploration of other continents.

Prominent figures of the time include Josef Ressel, a versatile inventor who conducted experiments in Trieste to test the use of propellers in steamships, and Guglielmo Marconi, who revolutionised sea travel with radio communication.

The maritime history of Trieste is tied up with ship-owning families such as the Cosulichs, shipping companies, and ships ever designed with innovation in hull construction, development of engine technology and continuous improvement of on-board comfort.

Finally, it is possible to follow the epic story of the Lloyd shipping company.

A comprehensive collection of documents, models, advertising graphics and on-board equipment reveals the extent of its activities, which clearly illustrate the links between seafaring, the business world and the city's history between the 19th and 20th centuries.

Temporary closure of the Lloyd section of the Maritime Museum

Visitors are informed that from 14 October 2024 the Lloyd's section of the Maritime Museum, located on the mezzanine floor of Magazzino 26, will be closed for exhibition refurbishment.
