History and fairs

The "Associazione degli interessati nel commercio del caffè" ("Association of practitioners in the coffee trade)" was formed in Trieste on 17 September 1891, later becoming the "Associazione degli interessati nel commercio e nell'industria del caffè" ("Association of practitioners in the coffee trade and industry"), the third such association in Europe, after Hamburg and Amsterdam.

The association has over 130 years of history, helping to develop a network among all in the coffee supply chain of Trieste, and doing much more besides.

Trieste, a free port established by Charles VI of the Habsburgs in 1719, and the main port of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, became the principal port for the coffee trade, and has remained so ever since, with coffee constituting 30% of imports.

The coffee supply chain in Trieste

Unlike other cities, Trieste can justly boast the title of "Capital of coffee", with companies that represent almost every part of the coffee supply chain apart from bean production, which takes place in the mostly tropical “countries of origin".

The city's coffee business today is represented by:
- five importers and wholesalers;
- about ten shipping houses specialising in coffee;
- about twenty roasters of various sizes;
- some of the most effective commercial agents specialising in coffee;
- one of the few decaffeination plants in Italy (Demus);
- the first modern coffee processing plant (Silocaf);
- analysis and research laboratories;
- training schools for professionals and enthusiasts
