The first castle to be seen is the impressive Duino Castle, clinging to a rocky karst spur on the sea cliffs.

Built in 1389, it has been the home of the aristocratic von Thurn und Taxis family, now known as Torre e Tasso, for four centuries.

The tour takes about an hour, during which you can admire the rich variety of Mediterranean flora of the park while inside the Castle, the precious furnishings, many historical documents, original letters, family photos and vintage prints.

Over the centuries many illustrious guests stayed in the Castle: Elisabeth of Austria (Sissi), the Counts of Chambord, Archduke Franz Ferdinand, Johann Strauss, Franz Listz, Paul Valery, Gabriele d'Annunzio and the famous poet Rainer Maria Rilke who composed the first two of the famous Duinesi Elegies here and, to whom, the suggestive panoramic walk is entitled. It is about 1.7 km long and connects Duino to the upper part of the bay of Sistiana.

Unique features are the piano played by Franz Liszt, the Palladio staircase (a masterpiece of architecture), the three hundred-and-sixty-degree views from the top of the tower, the ramparts overlooking the sea and the Bunker built in 1943 by the German Kriegsmarine.

Not far from Castello Nuovo (the New Castle) is Castello Vecchio (the Old Castle), The ruins of the first fortress of Duino (XI century) allow you to glimpse a rock overlooking the sea, known as the rock of the White Lady, creating a refined and magical atmosphere given by a magnificent view of the castle and the Adriatic coast.
