A few kilometres from Trieste is the Karst plateau, a land as rugged and hard as the rock it is made of but authentic and linked to traditions, capable of transmitting emotions and glimpses of unparalleled beauty. Our itinerary among the dry stone walls, the hamlets made up of stone houses, the sinkholes and remains of ancient castellieri (fortified villages) will lead you to a truly amazing naturalistic experience, the visit to the Grotta Gigante, a Karst cave containing the largest natural hall in the world. The route is 850 metres long and allows you to reach the depth of 101 metres below the earth's surface down 500 steps. The temperature inside the cave is constant all year round at about 11° C. After the walk, there is a stop in one of the typical "osmizas" for a light meal and a good glass of wine.

Muggia, a picturesque fishing village between Trieste and Istria, welcomes visitors in a lively atmosphere. Its historic centre, dotted with alleys, shops, and pastel-coloured fa ades, is a delightful place full of architectural details. Piazza Marconi is the beating heart of Muggia, with Palazzo del Municipio standing on its long side. It is a 13th-century building decorated with the lions of San Marco and noble coats of arms of the most important families of the city. The itinerary starts from the hill of Muggia Vecchia, an ancient hamlet inhabited until the end of the 15th century, known for its Sanctuary dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta with a double cycle of 14th and 15th-century frescoes. The Sanctuary offers a view over the Gulf of Trieste. You will continue along an easy, pleasant descent towards the town centre. A visit to a local producer will follow, where you will be offered a light meal. Return to Trieste by motorboat.

The Napoleonic road, from the Obelisk to Prosecco with a light meal in a typical “osmiza”

Transfer to the Obelisk, a viewpoint of rare beauty with stunning views. A short detour at the beginning of the path leads to an altitude of 332 metres to the vedetta Italia (a stone lookout), one of the many observation posts along the edge of the Trieste Karst. From here, you can see the city of Trieste right up to Grado. In honour of the engineer Giacomo Vicentini who planned its construction in 1821, the Napoleonic road or Strada Vicentina winds along a pleasant path on the edge of the Karst accompanied on one side by the view of the sea and the other by the trees of Bosco Bertoloni. At the end of the walk, there will be a light meal with typical products in a characteristic "osmiza".

Val Rosandra with a visit to a local producer and a tasting

Val Rosandra is a nature reserve located in the municipality of San Dorligo della Valle not far from the sea and a few kilometres from the centre of Trieste. This natural area is characterized by an uncontaminated environment and by the presence of the Rosandra River, the only surface river of the Trieste Karst, which has carved a furrow in the valley, creating an oasis of peace and nature. Thanks to a pleasant walk through the woods, you can discover the waterfall, the remains of the Roman aqueduct and the species of birds that have chosen this area as their habitat. Along the way, it will not be difficult to see a cave or the remains of a "jazera" (an ancient construction for the conservation of ice). You will visit a local producer for a small tasting at the end of the journey.

Here are some proposals for pleasant bike rides accompanied by a tour leader to spend a day riding among the areas surrounding Trieste, a borderland overlooked by the Karst plateaus, rich in naturalistic views of striking beauty and architectural gems of considerable value. After the ride, there will be a tasting of typical local products.

Val Rosandra with a visit to a local wine cellar and a tasting
Val Rosandra con visita cantina e degustazione
From the city centre towards the unspoiled and silent nature of Val Rosandra along the cycle and pedestrian path named after Giordano Cottur, a historical figure of the cycling world.
The cycling path, which starts in the district of San Giacomo, was created from an old railway which, going up the Karst plateau, connected the provincial capital of Friuli Venezia Giulia to the Slovenian town of Hrpelje. The route winds through historic viaducts, tunnels dug into the rock and old stations of the former railway, such as that of Sant'Antonio-Mocc , which was used to load wine.

Departure from the "Molo Bersaglieri" pier with the Delfino Verde motorboat. Navigating along the coast accompanied by the spectacular view of the city of Trieste, you will reach the small port of Muggia, the "Mandracchio". From here the streets wind up to reach the picturesque centre of this colourful fishing hamlet with its strong Venetian character. On the outskirts of the village, nature is the absolute protagonist, thanks to the many paths, which offer unique views among woods and hills.
