San Giusto Castle

Leaving Miramare for the city you come to the hill overlooking Trieste where the city's symbol, San Giusto Castle, stands.
Castello di San Giusto
It was on this hill that, in prehistoric times, a fortified enclosed village typical of the High Adriatic was built, later becoming the Roman settlement of Tergeste.

And it is here that in 1468 the Emperor Frederick III, ordered the construction of the castle's inner core as the residence of the Cesarean Captain, his representative in Trieste.

Over the following centuries the medieval castle attained its present form with impressive ramparts and a large courtyard.

Inside there is an interesting collection of medieval weapons.

Looking down from the walls you can admire one of the best views of the city.
