Duino Castle

The first castle to be seen is the impressive Duino Castle, clinging to a rocky karst spur on the sea cliffs.
Castello di Duino
Built in 1389, it has been the home of the aristocratic von Thurn und Taxis family, now known as Torre e Tasso, for four centuries.

Over the centuries the castle has hosted great artists such as Johan Strauss, Franz Liszt, Gabriele D'Annunzio, Hugo von Hofmannsthal, Paul Valery, Mark Twain and Reiner Maria Rilke, who wrote two of the Duino Elegies here and gives his name to the 2 km scenic walk along the sea cliffs leading to Sistiana Bay.
