Why is the Karst plateau so stony?

Legend has it that the Karst plateau was originally a green and fertile land, full of meadows, woods and streams of cool water.

One day, the good Lord realized that, in a corner of the land, there was a large pile of rocks that made farming difficult, and ordered Archangel Gabriel to gather them and throw them into the sea. So the Archangel Gabriel filled up a heavy sack and flew towards the Adriatic.

When he was near the Karst plateau the devil became curious and punctured the sack with his horns to see what was inside. What a disaster! All the stones spilled onto the ground and turned the plateau into an enormous stony wilderness.
