The Duino Fortress

Legend tells of a shepherd from the plateau who decided to build a small church for the Virgin Mary.

After having worked all day, he went home to rest. In the morning he was bewildered to find the wall destroyed and thought that it was the work of the devil.

He rebuilt what had been destroyed and, in the evening, after having worked so hard, he went to sleep as he did the day before. The next morning, to his great surprise, he found that the church was not only still there but was finished.

People believed that it was the Virgin who helped that zealous and devout shepherd. Evidence of this is the small footprint impressed in a stone found nearby.
